PSYCHOLOGICAL REASONS WHY YOU BINGE: MOOD AND PERSONALITY – DIFFERENT PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS
There is no general personality type that is more prone to binge-eating disorder. However, in addition to depression, overweight individuals with binge difficulties have a higher prevalence of three specific personality problems: dysthymic disorder, panic disorder, and borderline personality disorder. The exact nature of the relationship of these personality disorders and binge eating is not known, but they probably represent a susceptibility to emotional distress resulting in a decrease in impulse control.
If you have dysthymic disorder you suffer from a chronically depressed mood. You have low self-esteem and view yourself as uninteresting and incapable. You have accepted your lot in life and probably think, "That's just how I am." You feel inadequate and have trouble making decisions. You are quick to criticize yourself. You may have chronic sleep problems. You use overeating to obtain pleasure and self-gratification but all it does is make you feel guilty.
