Chat on AIM, without your computer!

As The Washington Post reports, "Instant messaging is hardly instant when you're waiting for your turn at the shared family PC. And away from home, IM becomes "eventual messaging" unless you're willing to run up text-messaging bills on your cell phone -- and wear out your fingers from typing on its numeric keypad."

Along comes a $100 handheld device called the Zipit Wireless Instant Messenger, that offers another way to get to your IM services such as AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). This stylish, seven-ounce gadget from Aeronix Consumer Media Systems Inc. ( http://www.ZipitWireless.com ) uses any WiFi Internet connection to link you to the three major messaging networks -- AOL, Microsoft's MSN and Yahoo. And it does so without subscription or usage fees. So this means you can be chatting away on AIM while someone else is using your computer, or when you are away from your computer for any reason!

Although they are not in widespread distribution as of right now, you should be able to get your hands on one. For more information, check out the official website at www.ZipitWireless.com.

Upcoming Next-gen AOL software package: AOL Suite

The upcoming package binding all of AOL's software (including the new AIM) into a single software package will be called the AOL Suite. The package is designed to create a unified code base for AOL applications such as AIM.

One of the advantages of this system will be reusability, meaning applications should consume less memory.

For now, the core components of the AOL Suite are: AOL Mail, Triton (the next-generation AIM client) and AOL Explorer, AOL's IE based browser that adds new functionality and features such as tabbed browsing and desktop search. More applications such as a Safety and Security Center and AOL Pictures photo application will be added in the future.

AIM part of upcoming movie Cry_Wolf

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) will be a major element in the upcoming terror movie "Cry_Wolf" about a group of high school seniors whose online rumors turn into a terrifying reality.

AOL's AIM network was selected as the film's instant messaging service, which the students use to spread rumors about a fictional serial killer called "The Wolf."

This should provide some good exposure for AIM with the upcoming release of it's latest software package, including the latest version of the instant messaging software, AIM 6 (dubbed AIM Triton).

Also, from September 9, AIM users will be able to message the buddy "AIMCryWolf" to get movie show times, vote in polls and more interactive features.
